The Rush County Historical Society has undertaken the task of restoring the old baggage cart from the Timken Santa Fe Depot. The cart dates back to the 1880s. It was used to transfer freight at the depot and in the immediate area. Plans are to have the cart restored and in working order by the Rush Center St. Patrick's Parade in March.
December 2023: The Baggage Cart has been sitting on the platform of the museum exposed to the weather for almost 40 years. Many years ago, while it was still in use by the railroad, the steel wheels were replaced with rubber tires. Most of the wood components will need to be replaced and the metal frame will need to be straightened.
1931: Pictured is a similar cart sitting on the platform of the depot in Shaffer, Kansas.
March 2024: All of the wooden parts of the cart had to be replicated with measurements determined from original parts.
Metal parts were straightened, sandblasted, and repainted.
March 2024: The Baggage Cart had its debut at the Rush Center St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 16, 2024.
